Airports

Where private jets actually depart from

Depending on the aircraft type, private flights can use a wide range of airports, including smaller airfields that scheduled aircraft do not serve regularly. That is the practical advantage of chartering. It is also the part that is hardest to judge from the outside, because two airports in the same city can differ more than two cities.

These guides set out what the official aeronautical publications say: runway lengths, operating hours, and the access rules that decide whether a given aircraft can land at all. Where an airport has a restriction worth knowing before it affects your plans, we name it.

London

Five airports, four access regimes. Farnborough is capped by planning law, Luton is the only one open around the clock, Northolt is an RAF station where military tasking comes first.

Paris

Le Bourget is limited by law, not by tarmac: a distribution order caps it at 25 seats. And no jet may leave its stand between 22:15 and 06:00.

Nice & Cannes

Nice takes anything you can charter. Cannes caps jets at 35 tonnes and has a runway shorter than the figure quoted almost everywhere, including on its own FBO's page.

New York

Teterboro's 100,000-pound limit is about the weight an aircraft actually carries that day, not its certified weight. The published 7,000-foot runway lands 838 feet shorter. And Westchester measures a different weight entirely.

Miami

Five airports, three different customs regimes. Opa-locka's main runway is closed every night unless you call an hour ahead, and the 40,000-pound rule everyone quotes applies to flight training, not to charter.

Los Angeles

Six airports, and the night restrictions do not all reach the same aircraft. Van Nuys bars departures above 74 dBA, Burbank enforces its rule by letting Stage 3 aircraft fly, and the customs roster closes earlier than any noise limit.

Geneva

The only airport here where business aviation sits outside the slot coordinator entirely: slots for it “cannot be requested from Slot Coordination Switzerland”. The airport issues a PPR instead — and states in writing that it guarantees neither a stand nor an ATC slot.

Ibiza

In summer the slot procedure for your jet is the airline one, word for word. And the order surprises people: the stand has to be approved before the slot can even be requested. The runway is not what limits anything here.

What an FBO is

An FBO, or fixed base operator, is the terminal that handles private flights away from the scheduled terminal. The difference to a scheduled terminal is one of scale and sequence. An FBO handles a handful of movements where a scheduled terminal handles thousands, with its own entrance, security screening and border control rather than shared queues.

How long before departure you need to arrive is not a fixed rule. It depends on the airport, the terminal and the operator, and we confirm it with your booking.

Tell us your departure point, destination, travel date and number of passengers. Our aviation team checks which aircraft and which airport fit your journey. Your enquiry is not binding, and a booking only comes into being once you have expressly confirmed it.
