Private jet customs: where you clear it decides where you can land

Private jet customs: business jet parked in front of a general aviation terminal after an international arrival

Private jet customs is usually explained as a nicer version of the airline process. That picture skips the part that matters for planning. Where customs can clear you, and when, decides which airports are even possible for your arrival. At JETAURA, we broker private jet charter flights through a network of aviation partners and operators. For passports and travel documents, read our article on do you need a passport for a private jet.

Do private jets go through customs?

Yes. A private jet arriving from abroad is cleared by the border authority of the arrival country. According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection, pilots of general aviation aircraft arriving from a foreign place must secure permission to land, and only after a compliant passenger manifest has been transmitted.

What the private setting changes is the question you ask. On an airline, customs is simply there when you land. On a private flight, someone has to check first whether it is there at that airport at that hour.

Not every airport can clear an arrival from abroad

Where do private jets land when they arrive from abroad? In the United States, the answer starts with the customs status the FAA records for airports. South Florida shows how much that status varies within one metropolitan area:

AirportCustoms status recorded by the FAA
Miami International (MIA)Airport of Entry, not a Landing Rights Airport
Opa-locka Executive (OPF)Landing Rights Airport, not an Airport of Entry
Boca Raton (BCT)US Customs User Fee Airport

Our page on three customs regimes at Miami's airports goes through all five South Florida fields in detail.

A business aviation airport is not automatically an Airport of Entry. The FAA records Teterboro, one of New York's business aviation airports, as a Landing Rights Airport and not an Airport of Entry. CBP also publishes a list of general aviation airports on its website.

For private jet customs, the closest airport to your destination is not always one that can receive you from abroad. Whether it can receive you at your arrival time is a separate question.

Private jet customs has hours and time windows

CBP's fact sheet for Opa-locka Executive sets out that permission to land must be requested no less than one hour and no more than 24 hours before arrival. It is granted with a tolerance of plus or minus 30 minutes. Outside that window, the permission is no longer valid and has to be secured again. CBP adds that flights arriving within an hour of closing time may be diverted to another international airport with supervisory approval.

At Fort Lauderdale Executive, according to CBP, the last inbound flight must be ready for customs processing by 23:30.

At Boca Raton, the FAA lists customs Thursday to Monday, 10:30 to 18:30. Arrivals outside those hours need an advance request and approval by US Customs.

For Paris Le Bourget, the official French aeronautical information publication lists aerodrome, air traffic services and customs as available around the clock. Our page on Paris Le Bourget covers the airport itself.

An international arrival needs two things to line up: an airport with the right customs status, and customs available at the time you land. Both belong in your enquiry as soon as you know them.

What private jet customs means in practice for your charter enquiry

You do not need to know customs categories to send an enquiry. You do need to tell us what is fixed and what is flexible. The choice of airport also matters for the offer itself, because airport fees are one of the factors a charter price depends on.

Take a hypothetical family. They plan a late-evening arrival in South Florida from abroad. The preferred airport is the one nearest their house. If that field works like Fort Lauderdale Executive, where CBP needs the last inbound flight ready for processing by 23:30, a landing after that time does not work as sent. If the enquiry says the arrival time can move, or another airport in the area is acceptable, we can take that into account when we check options.

Before you send an enquiry for an international flight, check this list:

  • Departure, destination, date and number of passengers are clear
  • You know whether the arrival airport is fixed or whether nearby airports are acceptable
  • You know how flexible the arrival time is
  • Every passenger has checked travel documents (see our passport article)
  • Food brought on board is planned with the import rules of the arrival country in mind (see private jet catering)

We do not grant permission to land and we do not decide what customs requires. Share your wishes, including flexibility on airport and time, with the enquiry itself.

Questions about private jet customs

Can a private jet land at any airport when arriving from abroad?

No. The arrival airport needs a customs status that allows it. In the United States, the FAA records whether an airport is an Airport of Entry, a Landing Rights Airport or a User Fee Airport.

What happens if a private jet arrives outside its permission window?

At Opa-locka Executive, CBP grants permission to land with a tolerance of plus or minus 30 minutes. If the arrival time moves outside that window, the permission is no longer valid and must be secured again.

Is customs open 24 hours at private jet airports?

It depends on the airport. The French aeronautical information publication lists customs at Paris Le Bourget as available around the clock. In Florida, the FAA lists customs at Boca Raton only Thursday to Monday, 10:30 to 18:30, with arrivals outside those hours subject to advance request and approval.

Is Teterboro an Airport of Entry?

No. The FAA records Teterboro as a Landing Rights Airport and not an Airport of Entry.

Planning an international arrival

Mention early where you want to land and how much room there is around the time. Private jet customs depends on both.
