Private jet dogs: what decides whether your dog can fly with you

Private jet dogs: a dog resting on a leather seat in a midsize jet cabin

Can my dog sit with me? At JETAURA, our answer has two parts. On many private jet flights, travelling with a dog is possible. Whether it works for your trip depends on two separate decisions about pets on private jets. One is made by the operator who flies the aircraft. The other is made by the authority of the country you arrive in.

We keep the two apart in this article, because each has a different person to ask.

Who decides whether your dog can fly on a private jet?

JETAURA is a broker. We arrange charter flights through a network of aviation partners and operators. The flight itself is carried out by the operator, and the operator sets the cabin rules for animals. Those rules depend on route, operator and aircraft.

Entry rules for private jet dogs: US, UK and EU

Entry rules for dogs are set by governments, and a private jet does not switch them off. Three authorities state the following on their own pages, retrieved on 15 September 2026.

DestinationWhat the authority statesSource
United StatesDogs must be at least 6 months old at entry, have a microchip detectable with a universal scanner, and, if they have only been in dog rabies-free or low-risk countries in the past 6 months, the only required document is the CDC Dog Import Form.CDC (page updated 22 July 2024)
Great BritainDogs must be microchipped before their rabies vaccination. A tapeworm treatment is required no less than 24 hours and no more than 5 days before arrival. Travellers are told to check that the route is approved for pet travel.GOV.UK
Travel within the EUThe rabies vaccination must be given by an official or authorised veterinarian, and its validity starts not less than 21 days after the primary vaccination. The EU pet passport is completed and issued by an authorised veterinarian.European Commission

The CDC page only covers dogs that have been in dog rabies-free or low-risk countries in the past 6 months. If your dog has been elsewhere, that page is not your case. Check with the CDC directly. The page itself was last updated on 22 July 2024, and government pages change, so open the live version before you travel.

For dogs entering the EU from a non-EU country, the European Commission states that they must be identified by a microchip, and that the rules are laid down in Commission Delegated Regulation (EU) 2026/131.

And the table is a summary, not advice. The authority of your destination has the final word, and your veterinarian is the right person to plan the timing with. For the human side of the border, see how customs clearance works on a private flight and our note on passport rules for private jets.

Does a private jet change the UK rule for dogs?

Partly. GOV.UK states that pets entering Great Britain have to travel as cargo on a plane, unless you are flying on a chartered private plane or travelling with a guide or assistance dog. On a chartered private flight, your dog is not required to travel as cargo. Whether it can sit in the cabin is still up to the operator and the aircraft, and the entry requirements for the dog still apply.

Two more points from GOV.UK belong next to it. First, "you can only use certain travel routes and companies to enter Great Britain." Second, the government publishes a list of approved air routes for pet travel, with a section for charter airlines: "These airlines transport pets in the carriage of the plane." If London is on your plan, our page on flying privately into London covers the airports.

What private jet dogs mean for your enquiry

Say you plan a charter into Great Britain with your dog. Two questions come up at once. Will the operator accept the dog in the cabin of the aircraft on offer? And does the dog meet the GOV.UK entry conditions, on a route and with a company approved for pet travel? The first question goes into your enquiry. The second goes to your veterinarian, with the GOV.UK page open. The trip only works once both have an answer.

Tell us in the enquiry

  • That a dog is travelling, and how many
  • Departure, destination, date and number of passengers
  • Every country the dog will enter on this trip, including stopovers

Confirm with the operator

  • Whether the dog can travel in the cabin on this aircraft

Check with the authority

  • Entry requirements at the destination (see the table above)
  • For Great Britain: whether the route and company are approved for pet travel

Clarify with your veterinarian

  • Microchip, rabies vaccination and documents, in the order the authority requires
  • Timing, such as the tapeworm treatment window before arrival in Great Britain

We check aircraft availability and put suitable options together. We do not rule on your dog's entry documents. That line stays with the authority and your veterinarian, and we would be doing you no favour by blurring it. Our FAQ covers the general questions on pets, children and luggage.

Frequently asked questions about private jet dogs

Does my dog need a microchip to fly into the United States?

Yes, according to the CDC. A dog entering or returning to the United States must have a microchip that can be detected with a universal scanner, and it must be at least 6 months old. For dogs that have only been in dog rabies-free or low-risk countries in the past 6 months, the CDC Dog Import Form is the only required document.

Do dogs need a tapeworm treatment to enter Great Britain?

GOV.UK states that a dog must be treated for tapeworm no less than 24 hours and no more than 5 days before arriving in Great Britain. The same page requires the microchip to be implanted before the rabies vaccination. The full conditions are on GOV.UK, and your veterinarian can plan the timing for your travel date.

Which EU regulation covers bringing a dog into the EU?

According to the European Commission, the rules for the non-commercial movement of pets into the EU are laid down in Commission Delegated Regulation (EU) 2026/131. The Commission states that dogs entering from non-EU countries must be identified by a microchip.

Does the CDC Dog Import Form cover every dog?

No. The CDC names the Dog Import Form as the only required document for one group: dogs that have only been in dog rabies-free or low-risk countries in the past 6 months. A dog that has been in other countries falls outside that page, so its case has to be checked with the CDC directly.
